Syracuse University Launches Civil Discourse Program

Staff Report / syracuselocal.org

Syracuse University is launching a program aimed at improving community communication by focusing on how to have "difficult" conversations. The initiative, titled "Modeling Civil Discourse," will feature presentation trainings designed to bridge gaps in communication among community members.

The program is set to run from November 2024 to March 2025. It will engage community members through a series of presentations and workshops based on existing frameworks for civil discourse. Specific tasks and dates for the program are still being finalized.

This initiative coincides with the university's recent Remembrance Week event, which honored the victims of Pan Am Flight 103. The Syracuse University community participated in a variety of activities, including music, poetry, and art, to celebrate the lives of the victims. Prior to the event, scholars showcased their plans for community engagement through outreach, research, education, and creative projects.
