200 Students Explore Marine Life at Jones Beach

Cornell University in Ithaca reports that more than 200 local students participated in the Marine Summer Field Trip Program at Jones Beach this summer. The program is a collaboration among Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County, New York Sea Grant, and New York state. Participants had a chance to learn about ocean life and ecology by wading in the water, seining for fish and crabs, exploring sand dunes, and touring the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center.

Michael Fiorentino, natural resources team leader for CCE Nassau County, said the program targets youth who do not have many opportunities to visit a beach. He noted that the students are especially excited when they see bait fish caught in the seine nets.
