Cornell Releases LakeEffect Barley for Craft Beverages

LakeEffect, the first winter malting barley released by Cornell Small Grains Breeding Program, is expected to have a significant impact on New York’s craft beverage industry. Developed at Cornell University in Ithaca, the new barley variety delivers high yields, resistance to disease, and a strong malting profile.

Mark Sorrells, a professor of plant breeding and genetics at Cornell’s School of Integrative Plant Science, led the breeding effort. He stated that LakeEffect combines the agronomic performance that farmers seek with the malting qualities that brewers and distillers value.

The new barley variety is poised to support the craft beverage industry by providing a reliable, high-quality ingredient for brewing and distilling operations. Additional details about LakeEffect can be found at Cornell University’s news website.
