Buffalo mayor cites $600 million in lost revenue, vows fixes

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In remarks released by Buffalo Mayorinreports, Buffalo Mayor Sean M. Ryan said that for years, other upstate cities made steady, incremental financial investments in their future.

“Buffalo? We decided to stop planning ahead and started living off our savings to get by.”

He said that while Syracuse, Rochester and Yonkers kept pace, Buffalo’s tax levy stayed flat and even fell below 2007 levels for over a decade.

“The result? More than $600 million in lost revenue.”

That’s $600 million the city wasn’t able to invest in streets, infrastructure, community centers and pools, Ryan said, adding that there were other basic services people rely on every day.

The mayor said the conditions of Buffalo’s streets directly correlate with “egregious fiscal mismanagement by previous administrations passing unbalanced budgets.”

“We can’t change the past. But we can make the right, responsible choices today to fix the basics and move Buffalo forward.”

Ryan is in New York.
