**High Lakes Elementary Teacher Honored as "Champion for Students"**

Bend-La Pine Schools celebrated Rod Davis, a fifth-grade teacher at High Lakes Elementary in Bend, Oregon, as their newest "Champion for Students" last night. The event, held in the district's Board Room, drew a packed crowd to recognize Mr. Davis's exceptional dedication and impact on his students and their families.

Mr. Davis was nominated for the honor by Carrie Hicks, a parent whose daughter was a former student in his class. According to Hicks, her seventh-grader still returns to visit and help out in Mr. Davis's classroom—a testament to the deep and lasting connections he fosters with his students. Hicks praised his creativity and compassion, highlighting features like his evolving collection of quirky hats, his engaging approach to teaching history through character roles, and his commitment to creating a supportive and joyful classroom environment.

"From his crazy hat collection that grows each year to his character role in the studying of the colonies, Mr. Davis is always seeking new and fun ways to engage his students," Hicks stated in her nomination. She also noted that Mr. Davis promises to attend his students' high school graduations, a promise his sincerity makes everyone believe.

High Lakes Elementary Principal Kimberly Sundberg also commended Davis during the celebration, emphasizing his exceptional teaching strategies and positive demeanor. "Mr. D truly is a champion for students and families," said Sundberg. "His classroom procedures are engaging, rigorous, and designed with quality in mind, turning state standards into real-life purpose. His dedication of time, humor, positivity, and joyful attitude make him one of High Lakes’ finest." She added that it is common for former students to return just to visit their beloved teacher.

In addition to his in-class efforts, Mr. Davis creates an annual "Summer Travels" video for his current and former students, combining fun and educational history lessons that highlight his year-round commitment to his students.

Rod Davis's recognition as a "Champion for Students" serves as a testament to his impact not only on his students’ education but also on the broader school community. Bend-La Pine Schools proudly celebrated his dedication and unique ability to inspire a love of learning.
